Wildlife through the lens: Nature photography tour for beginners in Tihany - Saturday, July 4, 2026

by Thomas Szczepaniak
Have you always been enchanted by the beauty of nature and the secret world of wild animals and plants? Would you like to not only experience it up close, but also capture it? Are you interested in the secret tricks of master photographers, who can elevate the captured moment to an artistic level and convey the magic of nature, its unspoiled, sometimes majestic, sometimes charming beauty to others?
Then join us on an exciting amateur nature photography trip around Tihany!
🇬🇧 The tour guide will conduct the program in two languages, Hungarian and English, as required.

No prior preparation or professional equipment is necessary; even your cell phone camera may be sufficient to participate in the tour. Learning expert tips and approaches, and observing birds and flora on site is an experience in itself.

In addition, our award-winning nature photographer and conservation expert tour guide can provide you with useful tips on choosing the right equipment if you are seriously considering pursuing your passion for nature photography.

Before we head out into nature and focus our cameras, our tour guide will give a short (approx. 1-hour) introductory presentation on the topic, during which we will learn the basics of nature photography.

The Tihany Peninsula is home to numerous natural formations that are unique in Europe, some of which were formed during previous volcanic activity (e.g., rock formations, spring caves).

The rare flora and fauna owe their presence to the relatively mild, Mediterranean-like climate of Tihany. The characteristic vegetation consists of dry forests of downy oak, flowering ash and black alder, as well as dry steppe grasslands, which are home to several rare and protected sub-Mediterranean plants.

The nature photography program takes place on the shores of the 30-hectare Inner Lake. The lake lies in the middle of the Tihany Peninsula, 25 meters above the level of Lake Balaton. The lake owes its existence to the volcanoes that once operated here: the peninsula’s inland lakes without outlets were formed in the place of former craters. In addition to the scenic values and native gray cattle grazing in the pastures, the main attraction for photographers is the ground squirrel. The highly protected ground squirrels, introduced in 2003, are responsible for loosening the soil and improving its water management.
