CANCELLED! Birdwatching expedition on water and in the “Puszta” – Lake Tisza and the Borsodi Mezőség – June 25-26, 2022

Update: Unfortunately, this tour will not take place on the previously announced date.

Day 1

Saturday morning at 8 am we meet in Poroszló at the accommodation, from there we walk to the docks. Here we’ll get our canoes ready – or if you’ve never paddled before, you’ll get a quick lesson – and then we’ll get on the water. We’ll head for the secluded marshes and bird sanctuary of the Poroszló Basin, which is rarely visited by humans.

We meander through narrow canals where the trees overhead are tangled, through fields of blooming water lilies and floating hearts, past tern colonies, fishing grey herons, diving cormorants, crested grebes, we paddle through the former backwaters of the Tisza, where the water is so clear you can see for several metres below. We’ll stop at lookouts, islands and everything else this vast marshland has to offer in a day.

We spend the evening in Poroszló, where we will have a barbeque and fresh fish dinner to enjoy around a cosy campfire.

Paddling: 8 hours

Accommodation: in Poroszló, Pipacs guesthouse, in 4-bed rooms or in your own tent

Day 2

On Sunday morning we pack early and leave our accommodation after breakfast. A few villages away, in Tiszabábolna, we will park our cars, from where we will continue our journey on foot into the protected puszta world of the Borsodi plain.

Few people know it, but the Borsodi-Mezőség Landscape Protection Area, which stretches along the northern bank of the Tisza River in the immediate vicinity of Hortobágy, is one of the largest contiguous areas of “pusztaság” (steppe) in Hungary, which is why the people who live here call it Little Hortobágy. The meandering waters of the Tisza and the streams flowing down from the Bükk mountains shaped this landscape until 1939, when the river was regulated.

Today, vast alkaline steppes and deserted riverbeds intersperse this uninhabited landscape, with the occasional kurgan or tell, testimonies to the fact that life was more vibrant on this floodplain in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages.

As the former settlements were replaced by pastures, so the rare, large predators of the wilderness appeared: the imperial eagles and the white-tailed eagles, the kings of the wilderness. But the graceful saker falcon, the red-footed falcon, the eurasian kestrel, and the jewel of the wilderness, the sky-blue-plumaged European roller, also breed here. These birds – and many more to see – are the ones we’ll be looking for today, guided by a nature conservation ranger from the district.

During the ringing season, we’ll get up close and personal with the work of the rangers and help ring European rollers.

At noon we relax over a traditional Puszta stew, then return from the birdwatching tour to our cars in the afternoon, from where we travel home individually.
